桑德拉·K. Mathews, PhD, is this year's recipient of the university's top teaching award, the Margaret J. Prouty Faculty Teaching Award.

One nominator says, “She challenges my view of the world and encourages me to seek the truth of history… Mathews also pushes students to take responsibility for their own education and encourages them to be their best.”

Says another, "I tried really, really hard on all the assignments she gave us, and that energy was always reciprocated 100%. I’m a freshman, and having a professor on campus who believed in me made me feel more comfortable on a new campus.”

A third student calls Mathews’ “Gender and the Wild West” course “the most intellectually stimulating experience of my life.”

The award was established in 1994 by Dr. Margaret Prouty, a 1932 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University. The award recognizes and rewards a faculty member for the pursuit of excellence in teaching and for making a distinct difference in the intellectual lives of students.
